April 26, 1997 was a special day. A litter of Irish Setters was born in
Utah, one of whom was ultimately named Crimson Sadie O'Neal. Though the
litter had a very distinguished pedigree, the breeders didn't stay in touch
with, nor ask help from the the breeders of the sire and dam, and the
puppies disappeared off the radar screen before they had even been
evaluated. Crimson went into a pet home, and seemed to have been pretty well
cared for for the first four years. However, when she was just shy of age
five, she was turned over to rescue after an unfortunate weekend in the
pound. Her family had decided to divorce, and she was one of the casualties.
Very sad for her, but a blessing in disguise for me, as I had been waiting
to fill my new home and fenced yard with a redheaded bundle of joy. (she's a
very big bundle too;-). And so, with the blessing of the stud dog's owner,
rescue turned her over to me. It has been a little over two years now, and I
cannot imagine how I ever got through a 17 year drought with no dog of any
kind, let alone without this very, very special girl, who woowood her way
into my heart with the first picture I saw of her.
I have a busy workday tomorrow, but when I get home, we'll pile in the car
and go to Dairy Queen to get her a hamburger and a dish of ice cream. I
have a new stuffy for her stashed in the garage. Brea will undoubtedly
steal it, just because she can, and patient Crimson will let her, and then
will run to me and tell me all about it;-)
Happy, happy 7th birthday to my dear girl:-)
