This is a TRUE EMERGENCY!!!
DON'T HESITATE TO GET HIM TO A VET!!!

1.   distended abdomen
2.   rigid (hard) abdomen
3.   painful when touched in the abdoment
4.   vomiting foamy or liquid material
5.   unproductive attempts at vomiting or retching
6.   arched back
7.   praying position (down in front, rear standing)
8.   laying down on belly - crouched position
9.   curling up in a ball
10.  laying or sitting in an unusual location
11.  seeking a hiding place
12.  looking at their side
13.  frequent swallowing (aerophagia)
14.  hypersalivation (drooling heavily)
15.  drinking excessively
16.  lack of appetite
17.  quiet, any abnormal behavior
18.  lethargy, weakness
19.  panting, breathing rapidly or heavily
20.  red gums, or white gums (not normal pink color)

You know your own dog the best and you know when things aren't quite right.

If you notice any of these signs in your dog, call your vet or take him to an emergency clinic as soon as possible.  Not all dogs show the classic signs of bloat or GDV, some may be very subtle or be at a pre-bloat stage.

Keep a copy of this list, your vets phone number, an emergency clinic phone number, and your pet's medical history in a convenient place in case of an emergency.

Bloat and GDV occur very quickly, and a dog can be in shock within minutes.

KEEP THIS HANDY.
Fat Balls

Here's a recipe for Fat Balls (same as Satin Balls, I think) that
people use to fatten up their dogs.

1 lb ground meat
1 jar peanut butter
1/2 regular box of oats, soaked in at least 1 pint of heavy cream
1 8 oz package of cream cheese
5-6 eggs
Wheat germ to the right consistency.

Mix together (go on, take your rings off and use your hands, Reid
might be happy to clean them off for you), form into meatballs and
serve. Yum!

For those of you who have used this recipe, please clarify a few
things.

1) What is a jar of peanut butter? I mean, we use the 5 lb buckets
around here, but I think that might be a bit excessive.
2) What's a box of oats? Big box? Little box?

Back when Angus was a mental teen, and on kibble to boot, I would put
him through his little obedience paces and get some food down him by
rewarding him. Undoubtedly that is the root of the reason why he won't
eat without an audience.

Kim n Angus

Kim:

The box of oats is the small one- 16-18 oz, I think.
Same goes for the jar of peanut butter.
Also, instead of wheat germ, I use oat bran or some other similar non-wheat grain.
I have also made them with ground turkey.

Bone Appetit!

Jill Smith asked the list about care and conditioning of "pee coat".   On April 11, 2003 Jill Smith (snflwrkate@aol.com) reported the summary from the list:

1st choise - Pantene - Pantene Pro V-Sheer Volume  (both shampoo and conditioner)

Close Second - Traleigh Ultra Phix - Conditioner straight from the bottle

Tied for Second - Cure Care - a human product also found at Beauty supplies.  (I would like to know if anyone uses the shampoo too, or just the conditioner)

Other choices with only a couple of people using:

The "Stuff"
Pro-Groom
Summerwinds Protect a Coat
Self rinse - Purple stuff mixed with water and sprayed on.

The one comment made most often - NEVER BRUSH A COAT WITH URINE ON IT.

Loma Clark  (lclark@theriver.com)  wrote:
Add a tablespoon of apple cidar vinegar "with the mother" in it to the dogs food at least once a day.  They love it and it does wonders for their digestion and coat.

It was a trick George Alston shared at one of this clinic's on how it can clear up "tear-stains" on the eyes of light colored breeds.  also learned from some respected Golden breeders in Phoenix that they use it if they even suspect a staph infection starting on one of their Goldens.
SATIN BALLS RECIPE
The following recipe was sent to Wellpet by Diana Carreon, R.N.,C.  It quickly became one of the most requested posts on Wellpet. It is good for picky eaters or to put weight on a dog.

Ingredients
10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal [or comparable natural brand]
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf.

Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.

Thaw as needed.
BOUNCE

HI All

This was passed on to me by one of my quilting buddies and thought of my dog
and horse pals. Walking or riding on trails and encountering yellowjackets. I
tested it on my humming bird feeder which draws the darn hornets and yellow
jackets and it works.!!!!

My mail carrier told me that the US Postal service sent out a message to all
letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep
yellow jackets away.
Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer.

I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The yellow jackets just
veer around you.  And all this time you've just been putting Bounce in the
dryer!

It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them.
It also repels mice & spread them around foundation areas, or in trailers,
cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too
often.
Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors
during mosquito season.

Eliminates static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.
Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television
screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

Freshen the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer
or hang in the closet.

Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through sheet of Bounce
before beginning to sew.
Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty
luggage before storing.

Freshen the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.
Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with
water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The antistatic agent apparently
weakens the bond between the food.

Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the
wastebasket.
Collect cat hair. Rubbing  the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically
attract all the loose hairs.

Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a
sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.
Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will
collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the
bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.
Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or
sneakers overnight.

Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.
Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing
them. Keeps them smelling fresh.

And now that you know, print and keep on file or pass it around.

This is what my husband uses for training treats:
Liver brownies
In a food processor, process about 1  1/4 pound of liver (until
practically liquid),  then add 1  1/2cup of flour and 1 cup of corn
meal.  Add garlic powder to taste.  Spread on a cookie sheet that
you have sprayed with pam and floured.  Bake for 20 minutes at 350.
When hot from oven, cut into tiny bite size pieces.  They will be
soft yet firm.  My dogs love them.  And in class and at shows people
are always asking for some because their dogs will do anything for
them!

On May 9, 2003 Pam Legault forwarded this to the list:  MOSQUITOS

It's about that time folks--so thought I'd send out this reminder!!!!  OK, mosquitos...prepare to be repelled!!!!!

Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in Louisiana..just wipe on & go...Great for Babies

Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October.  He said it works.  he was right.  Hasn't had a mosuiito bite in 33 years.  Try it Everyone he has talked into trying it works on them.  vitamin B-1 (Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.)

If you eat bananas, the mosquitos like you, - something about the banana oils your body processes it.  Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitos will be much less interested.

This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods everyday), is Vick's Vaporub.

Plant marigolds around the year, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without using insecticides.

"Tough guys"  Marines who spend a great deal of time "camping out" say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol.

One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from the clear real vanilla.  This is the pure vanilla that is sold in Mexico.  It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects.

Also, if you like sitting outside in the evenings, put some water in a white dinner plate and add a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent.  Set the dish on your porch, patio, or other outdoor area.  I'm not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white plate color, or what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh Joy/water mixture, and usually within about 10 feet of the plate.  Check this out--it works just super!
